Battlezone es un clásico juego de disparos 3D en primera persona en el que el jugador controla un tanque que patrulla una peligrosa zona de guerra. Situado en un valle rodeado de montañas, el objetivo es destruir tantos tanques enemigos como sea posible, mientras se evita el fuego de retorno y se destruyen o evitan los misiles guiados que aparecen ocasionalmente. Los tanques enemigos son de dos tipos: tanques estándar de movimiento lento y "supertanques" de movimiento rápido. Un solo impacto recibido de un tanque enemigo o de un misil guiado provocará la pérdida de un tanque del jugador. También aparece ocasionalmente un platillo volante, pero no ataca al jugador y puede ser ignorado o destruido para obtener puntos extra. Una pantalla de radar en la parte superior de la zona de juego muestra la posición actual de cualquier tanque o misil enemigo que se encuentre en el radio de acción, y la zona de guerra está plagada de pirámides y cajas indestructibles que pueden proporcionar cobertura temporal. Sólo se permite un único disparo en la pantalla en todo momento, por lo que la precisión de los disparos es vital para sobrevivir.

Termina las seis mesas a toda costa eliminando un máximo de oponentes. Para ello se dispone de un láser multidireccional (tiro ultrarrápido) y terroríficas bombas torpedo. Tabla 3: Se penetra en una caverna abisal donde hay pulpos temibles al acecho. Los destructores sólo pueden lanzar sus bombas a través de los lados delgados de la caverna. Tabla 4: Un complejo de torres sustituye a la parte inferior de la caverna. Además de los destructores y el pulpo, las minas reaparecen en gran número. Tabla 5: Versión acelerada de la Tabla 4. Tabla 6: Vuelves a la Tabla 1 en una versión acelerada pero debes enfrentarte a todos tus oponentes.
