Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a one-on-one competitive fighting game, featuring two different game modes: a Scenario Mode where the player competes against a series of CPU-controlled opponents, and a Battle Mode for two players. In the Scenario Mode, the matches consist of two segments: the player will fight against a regular-sized monster as one of the Rangers, and after the defeating the monster they will battle a giant version of it. Initially only the five original Rangers and the Megazord are available with the Green Ranger and Dragonzord being locked until they are defeated.

This take on the Power Rangers franchise is different from the many other Power Ranger games as it features FMV with real video of the actual TV show. The footage is spliced from nine different episodes and the gameplay is reminiscent of games such as Dragon's Lair and Space Ace where the player must press a button at a certain time to avoid being punched, kicked, avoid a trap, etc. Failure to miss pressing a button will continue to play the footage, but cause the player to loose a life. After a certain set of lives are lost, the game will be over.

Single players pick a Ranger (Red, Pink, Blue, Yellow, Black, or the unlockable Green) and take him or her through a series of battles against Rita's monsters. After one normal battle, the monster grows very large, and then it is time to take out the MegaZord.

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the player gets to play as any of the rangers (Jason, Trini, Billy, Kimberly, and Zack) through 7 levels. Except for the last few, all the other levels let the player pick whatever ranger wanted. Each has their own unique "super move". At the end, whoever the player choses to play as will automatically morph and at the end of each level the player gets to fight the boss.

A diferencia de todos los otros juegos de Power Rangers que llegaron a Mega Drive, en este título la acción se desarrolla como si fuera un episodio de la serie de televisión. Con un juego similar al que se ve en la clásica Dragon's Lair, donde el jugador debe presionar los controles en el momento adecuado para atacar y defender. Si falla, la trama continúa, pero le costará al personaje una pérdida de vidas. Al abordar la primera y más clásica fase de los Rangers, nuestros héroes deben luchar contra Rita Repulsa y su ejército de alienígenas con la ayuda del mentor Zordon.
