In Avenging Spirit the protagonist is a spirit out for revenge. He has been murdered by a group of gangsters and his girlfriend has taken hostage by them. Her father uses his brand new machine to call the man's spirit back from the dead, telling him that they are holding his daughter ransom unless he turns over his research of ghost energy. In side-scrolling fashion, the game features six different stages - the city, the rooftops, a factory, the city sewers and two levels dealing with the mobsters base of operation. The player is able to possess enemies, 20 in all, and use any skills or weapons they have, to complete the level. The player's health is represented by ghost energy and it is drained when he is not inside a host. The story leads to two different endings.

While walking out with his girlfriend the game's hero is ambushed by unknown enemies who snatch his girlfriend and shoot the hero dead. Now, as a wandering spirit with the ability to possess almost anybody he comes across, the hero is summoned by his girlfriend's father and given a mission to save her from the mysterious crime syndicate that holds her hostage. Only then can the hero rest in peace. The player's character 'inhabits' a body with which to combat the game's enemies. When that body is killed, providing there is a living enemy nearby (other than that of a boss) the player can posses them and continue playing. Each time this is done, it costs the player some of their 'spirit energy'. Should the hero die when there are no enemies close by for the player to possess; the game is over.

El juego es un juego de disparos sobre railes, con un juego visto desde la perspectiva de una cabina en primera persona. La nave del jugador se mueve automáticamente a través de entornos planetarios previamente renderizados, y solo el objetivo puede moverse libremente. Los cañones láser y las ojivas de fusión están disponibles para golpear a innumerables enemigos. Los láseres tienen munición ilimitada, pero necesitan unos momentos para recargarse. Las ojivas actúan como bombas inteligentes y despejan la pantalla de los enemigos, pero solo están disponibles en cantidades limitadas. Se reponen al alcanzar un cierto puntaje. AX-101 on Mega-CD is a first person futuristic shoot'em up where your goal is to protect humanity from UFO attacks. The player pilots a spaceship and has to handle cannon during space, air - and sometimes underground - battles. 3 kinds of weapons are available: simple cannon, reloaded cannon (way more powerful) and a limited stock of bombs (to be handled carefully).
